Forms Spherical VS Cuts Sea Sponges

Forms and spherical are a complete, un-cut sponge. This means that the sponge will have a flat bottom where it was cut from the ocean floor, but otherwise will be perfectly round.

Cuts are when a larger sponge has been cut into pieces. Usually cuts will have two flat sides but a round top.

For everyday use, cuts are fine. If you wish to proudly display your sponge as decoration, we recommend a form.

Before you choose a natural sponge, think about what you are going to use it for. A bath sponge should usually be between 4 to 7 inches (10 to 18 cm) in length, depending on how large your hand is.

Picking the right bath sponge means comparing the material, durability, wash-ability, shape and overall aesthetics of the sponge. Cost is also a factor.

Bath sponges are basic hygiene items people use to cleanse their bodies, and because people have different preferences when it comes to bathing, several sponges may need to be tried before finding the right fit.

"Paradise on Earth" Koufonisia Islands Greece

Koufonisia (meaning hollow islands) was given the name as the huge caves convinced the pirates that the island was hollow when observed from the sea. They are located between Naxos and Amorgos, as part of the Cyclades, and are a 7.5-9 hour ferry ride from Athens.Koufonisia consist of two islands, Pano and Kato Koufonisi (Upper and Lower Koufonisi) and belong to the complex of Small Cyclades and are rightly characterized by many as "Maldives of the Aegean".

Natural Sea Sponge tips

  • Sponges will feel hard and dry when delivered
  • Fully saturate sponges with water and squeeze a few times, they will transform to become lovely & soft!
  • Rinse thoroughly after use and let air dry completely
  • To freshen, soak sponges occasionally in warm water with baking soda. Rinse afterwards to ensure all baking soda has washed out completely. A properly cared for sponge can give many months of bathing pleasure
  • Natural sponges do not keep bacteria like their synthetic counterpart
  • All sea sponges will degrade with use, regardless of type or brand
  • Because sea sponges are natural organisms, they vary by shape, size, colour & texture

The advantages and the disadvantages of the sea sponge tampons

Alternative to tampons or menstrual cups

Sea sponge tampons  are natural sea sponges that are inserted into the vagina to absorb the blood, then rinsed out and used again. Sponges are reusable, in constant use they will last around 6-12 months. When they start to tear they should be replaced.

Any natural sea sponge can be used to absorb menstrual blood. You can purchase sponges that are specifically designed for this or you can also purchase sea sponges for bath/cosmetic/art use in that case you may need to trim it to a desired shape and size.

Once you have purchased a sponge, you should wash it thoroughly to remove any sand particles or other debris. Some sources say to boil the sponges in water for 10 minutes to sterilize them. Boiling the sponges can shorten their lifespan, so some sources do not recommend this, and suggest using other methods, such as soaking in vinegar, tea tree oil or hydrogen peroxide solutions.

Advantages
·    Cheaper than tampons in the long run, and much cheaper than menstrual cup initially.
·    More comfortable to wear than tampons (and perhaps even more comfortable than menstrual cups), you may not even feel it is there.
·    Can be trimmed to a desired shape and size.

Disadvantages
·    No proof they are safe. The softness of the sponge allows it to easily fall apart, sometimes leaving pieces in your vagina, which can, and has lead to, toxic shock syndrome.
·    No strings or stems to make removal easier.
·    Not very effective for heavy flow.
